Best Music of 2009: Day 3
#8: Real Estate - s/t
Every year, I always discover a band in November/December that is relatively new. They win my heart, and I immediately add them to my “best” list. This year, Real Estate is that band. I adore them. Pitchfork gave Real Estate an 8.5 rating and a “best new music” award, and I couldn’t agree more. The whole record is melancholic yet comfortable. Also, can I just say that the album art is awesome? I don’t think I’m going to stop playing this one for a while.
Recommended tracks: “Suburban Dogs”, “Beach Comber”, “Snow Days”
Best Music of 2009: Day 2
#9: John Mayer - Battle Studies
Yes, John Mayer is only number 9 on my list. I’ve got serious love for the guy, but Battle Studies is in no way my favorite release. The honesty of the record hits home hard, though. “War of My Life” touches me personally, and the special Mayer-only riffs on “Assassin” are breathtakingly tasteful. The guy has immense talent, and I love it. However, at the end of the day, I am a Heavier Things kind of girl. Still a great album, so JM is in my 2k9 top 10.
Recommended tracks: “Assassin”, “Edge of Desire”, “Heartbreak Warfare”

#10: Monsters of Folk - s/t
“If I were livin’ in a mansion, I’d probably just sleep out on the deck.”
Alright, I have always been a sucker for Conor Oberst. I loved him my freshman year of high school with Bright Eyes and I still love him now. His voice is hauntingly crisp on the track “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)”. Lovely, not to mention the greatness that is the additional combination of M.Ward and Jim James. I do like this self-titled debut album, although I wasn’t entirely blown away. That is why M.O.F. receives a spot at number 10 in my book for 2k9. I’m a fan of folk music, and I have found that it is not too bad in this modern fashion, either. Fresh light or renewed hope? Your call.
Recommended tracks: “Dear God”, “Losin’ Yo Head”, “Ahead of the Curve”
